Today in class we analyzed A Message To Garcia and the story's background. It all started as an inspirational essay and was published in 1899, and it quickly and unexpectedly went viral. It was made into pamphlets and movies, it got translated into 37 different languages, and it sold over 40 million copies. The story is set in the Spanish American war when cuban was seeking independence from Spain. The story is about the 25th president, Mckinley who gave army officer Rowan a message that he needed to get to Garcia. Rowan took these orders to heart and put all his effort into getting the letter to Garcia. Mckinley was assassinated in his second term and due to this, he got the mountain Denali named after him but in 2015 the original name was returned. Anyway, Rowan got this message delivered right away because it was his order and he had the responsibility. The moral of the story is to take initiative, which is "to do the right thing without being told" and this is still a common saying in the military today. There is a goal for humans to reach their full potential of knowledge and understanding, and the act of living up to ones full potential comes from the Greek word "arete". Overall, in class today we discussed the backstory and true meaning of A Message To Garcia.
